Recent Developments in All-Solid-State Battery

All-Solid-State Battery (ASSB) is a new battery technology that has a few potential advantages compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries. The key feature of an all-solid-state battery is that it uses a solid electrolyte instead of the liquid or gel electrolyte found in conventional batteries. This change brings several major benefits:

 

1.Improved safety: Solid electrolytes are not as flammable as liquid electrolytes, so all-solid-state batteries are less likely to burn or explode when overheated or damaged, which greatly improves safety.

2.Higher energy density: All-solid-state batteries can store more energy, which means they can provide longer driving range under the same volume or weight, which is especially important for electric vehicles.

3.Longer service life: Solid electrolytes are more stable than liquid electrolytes and less prone to chemical decomposition, so all-solid-state batteries have a longer service life.

4.Wider operating temperature range: Solid-state electrolytes can operate stably over a wider temperature range, which makes all-solid-state batteries more reliable in extreme temperature conditions.

5. Faster charging speed: Theoretically, all-solid-state batteries can achieve faster charging speeds than traditional lithium-ion batteries, although this requires further technological development to achieve.

 

When it comes to all-solid-state batteries, the United States’ “Troika” is the most famous, one of which is Solid Power. It was established in 2012 and is headquartered in Louisville, Colorado, USA. It adopts a technical route like Toyota, which uses sulfide as a solid electrolyte.

"SK On" is a subsidiary of South Korea's SK Group, which specializes in the development and manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles (EV). The company became independent from SK Innovation in 2021, reflecting the battery unit's growing importance and unique business focus within SK Group's broader business portfolio. SK On primarily produces lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles. Their batteries are known for their high energy density, safety and long life and are suitable for a wide range of electric vehicles.

 

Solid State Force and SK On have taken a major step forward in advancing electric vehicle (EV) technology with a collaboration agreement at the CES 2024 event in Las Vegas, Nevada. The collaboration aims to accelerate the development of all-solid-state batteries and represents an important step in the pursuit of safer and higher-performance battery technology. 


This strategic collaboration not only highlights SK On and Solid-State Force's progress in battery technology innovation, but also positions them as key players in the electric vehicle industry's shift toward safer and more efficient energy storage solutions. As global demand for sustainable mobility continues to grow, collaborations like this play a vital role in shaping the future of electric mobility.
